620,000 taxpayers have been conned by refund scammers sending e-mails regarding 2018/19 tax rebates –don’t be number 620,001.

We are well aware that in the current climate the level of unscrupulous “scams” is increasing so here are the important points to remember:

• HMRC will never send notifications by e-mail about tax rebates or refunds
• HMRC only notify taxpayers about tax refunds through the post or through your pay via PAYE

Any text message, e-mail or voicemail message saying HMRC owes you money is a scam. Do not click on any links in the message.

Instead, forward the details by e-mail to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk Or text 60599.

This warning is particularly relevant following the announcement of the support packages from the government due to COVID-19 but here too the rules are simple:

• If you are employed you do not claim under the job retention scheme –refunds will be claimed via payroll software by your employer.

• If you are self-employed HMRC will contact you in due course by letter if they believe you qualify for the scheme.
